Where I’m From

Hello my Mama Kat friends!  I’ve been MIA lately, busy with holiday obligations and haven’t had a lot of time to write.  But I lucked out when I saw this week’s prompts, because earlier in the year I wrote a post with the Where I’m From template.  So, I’m cheating a little by reposting.  I look forward to reconnecting in the new year. Happy Holidays!

This blog is the result of a writing exercise I completed after being inspired by a post I saw on Urban Moo Cow, by Debra Cole.  She wrote a beautiful piece called Where I’m From, which was inspire by Galit Breen’s essay at Mamalode.  Fortunately, there was a template that helped me get my wheels turning.  When I was finished, I shared it with someone I trust, who’s been encouraging me to be more “raw” with my content.  She urged me to post it, so I’m taking a chance.  I hope you like it!  Thank you to Debra and Galit for motivating me to step outside my comfort zone.

Autism Angel: Jodi Hammond

Jody Head Shot

Jodi Hammond, speech language pathologist extraordinaire, has worked with my son for almost seven years.  Where, oh where, does time go?  I remember the first time we met her, soon after I’d given birth to my fourth child.  I was exhausted and Bear’s world had been rocked by the arrival of his new brother.  Complicating matters further, he’d also just switched schools for the fifth time in five years (long story).  Circumstances weren’t ideal in his little world – and he wasn’t happy about any of it.  Continue reading Autism Angel: Jodi Hammond

Awesome News From CPK!

th[8]

I have some really good news to share.  Do you remember the blog I wrote for the Huffington Post about our wild night at a California Pizza Kitchen in Birmingham Alabama?  Well, it didn’t go viral or anything, but it did trigger a series of cool events.  After it posted, word got back to the executives at CPK, who then tried to find me on Twitter (since that was the contact information that the Huffington Post listed at the bottom of my blog).  Problem is, I’m not really good with Twitter – but I’m working on that, Allison Barrett Carter, I promise.  Anyway, I was a wanted woman and didn’t even know it. I Dare Allie – Update # Two

As you may know, I have embarked on a year-long journey/mission to do something new, every day, for a year.  You can read all about it in my first I Dare Allie post, along with my list from the first three weeks.  My inspiration was Lu Ann Cahn’s book, I Dare Me.  You can learn more about her year on the I Dare Me blog.   Some firsts are simple, for which I catch a lot of heat from my spouse (but as I tell him – I can’t jump out of a plane every day!)  Also, “firsts” that I haven’t done since childhood will count (the same as in Cahn’s book).

March 13, 2014 – I went to my first track meet.  My second son is on his middle school’s track team, so I went to watch him (of course).  Believe it or not, I’d never been to a track meet before.  They’re a bit long and it’s a chilly time of year, but it’s fun to watch the kids as they cross the finish line.
