Emmy Predictions and a Contest

Emmy-Awards[1]The Emmys are on tonight and it’s one of my favorite award shows.  This year I am particularly invested, because I just came off of a serious Netflix binge and I am now officially a fan of House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.  Both shows have been nominated in multiple categories.  There are some pretty good races this year, so I think it’ll be an exciting night – not to mention all the fashion.  I’m hosting a contest, too.  I’m breaking down all my predictions for the major categories, but I also want to know who or what you’re pulling for and/or think will win.  Share your picks in the comment section (or e-mail me allie@thelatchkymom.com).  The person with the most predicted wins will score a $20 Starbucks card!  Rumor has it that the Pumpkin Spiced Latte will be launched any day now!  I need your guesses by 8:00 P.M. tonight.  Be sure to check back tomorrow to see if you’ve won and read my Emmy commentary.

Best Dramatic Show:

Breaking Bad

Downton Abbey

Game of Thrones

House of Cards

Mad Men

True Detective

What a category!  Love Mad Men and Downton Abbey, but they’re not going to win.  House of Cards – oh my, this is tough!  Loved it, but nobody is picking it.  I’ve never watched Breaking Bad, but I think it’s the one to beat.  My Pick:  Breaking Bad.

Best Comedy Show:

Louie

Modern Family

Orange is the New black

Silicon Valley

Veep

From what I’ve read, the consensus seems to be that Veep will win, but Louis deserves it.  The “Dark Horse” is Orange is the New Black – mostly because nobody think it’s a comedy.  I happen to agree, but I’m still picking Orange is the New Black because I LOVE it and it definitely has the buzz.  My Pick:  Orange.

Lead Actor in  a Drama Series:

Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad

Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

Jon Hamm, Mad Men

Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom

Woody Harrelson, True Detective

Mathew McConaughey, True Detective.

No brainier.  The Emmy goes to Mr. McConaughey.  Makes me sad though, pretty sure I’ll never see him in another romantic comedy.  Also, I’d like to point out that Jon Hamm has never won and that is a crime!  I would welcome the upset.  My pick:  Alright, alright, alright – Mathew McConaughey.

Best Actress in A Drama Series

Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey

Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

Claire Danes, Homeland

Robin Wright, House of Cards

Lizzy Caplan, The Masters of Sex

Kerry Washington, Scandal

My girl, Julianna Margulies, so derserves this Emmy after last season.  She rocked it!  And the Emmy people also have to give it to her since they snubbed The Good Wife in Best Drama.  I will spare you my Good Wife soap box (but you can read about my obsession here and here).  Tomorrow’s blog will not be pleasant of she doesn’t.  My Pick:  Julianna Margulies.

Best Actor in a Comedy Series:

Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Ricky Gervais, Derick

Matt LeBlanc, Episodes

Don Cheadle, House of Lies

Louis C. K., Louie

William H. Macy, Shameless

I don’t watch any of these shows!  But all the critics love Louis C. K. (and I have seen him live), so I am going with him.  My pick:  Louis C. K.

Best Actress in a Comedy Series:

Lena Dunham, Girls

Melissa McCarthy, Mike and Molly

Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie

Taylor Shcilling, Orange is the New Black

Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

Everyone’s calling for Julia Louis Dreyfus or Melissa McCarthy.  Julia has won the last two, possibly three years and the Melissa thing I can’t get behind.  SO I am going with Piper!  My pick:  Taylor Schilling.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series:

Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad

Jim Carter, Downton Abbey

Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones

Josh Charles, The Good Wife

Mandy Patinkin, Homeland

Jon Voight, Ray Donavon

Every article I read calls for Aaron Paul to win.  But he’s won a few times and I have to go with my heart.  Please, please, please make Will’s death worth something!  My pick:  Josh Charles.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series:

Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad

Maggie Smiht, Downton Abbey

Joanne Froggatt, Downton Abbey

Lena Heady, Game of Thrones

Christine Baranski, The Good Wife

Christina Hnedricks, Mad Men

My heart is with Christine Baranski, but for this category I am going to jump on the Breaking Bad bandwagon.  My Pick:  Anna Gunn.

Outstanding Supporting Actress is a Comedy Series:

Andre Braugher, Brooklyn Nine Nine

Adam Driver, Girls

Jesse Tyler-Fergerson, Modern Family

Ty Burrell, Modern Family

Fred Armisen, Portlandia

Tony Hale, Veep.

I think that Modern Family is going to experience some backlash.  Going with EW’s pick.  My Pick:  Tony Hale.

Outstanding Supporting Actress is a Comedy Series:

Mayim Bialik, The Big Band Theory

Julie Bowen, Modern Family

Allison Janney, Mom

Kate Mulgrew, Orange is the New Black

Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live

Anna Chulmsky, Veep

I don’t have a horse in this race, so I am going with a favorite of mine – and the gal who always wins when she’s nominated.  My pick:  Allison Janney.

Be sure to check back tomorrow to see if you won and to read and share your thoughts on the show.

So tell me, who do you think will win?

    1. Yvonne, thanks for commenting. I’m grateful to have had some finally chime in. I don’t think your picks are too far out there. You never know, upsets happen all the time. That’s what makes it exciting.

    2. Yvonne – momma, you tanked:(. But don’t feel bad. I thought I nailed my picks and I only got three right! But thank you again for playing, I really appreciate it.

  4. Wow.. I always thought the Emmy Awards were in the winter, like many of the others.
    I should tune in!
I don’t watch most of these shows, with the exceptions of Modern Family and Louie. Louie is honestly fascinating and brilliant.
I haven’t seen the others, though.
    I’ll tune in!

  5. HOLY crap, I am SO so so so SO bad at this. I love Orange is the New Black and House of Cards (and True Blood and Homeland and Shameless) but I don’t watch anything else, and I don’t know any of the actors’ names (well I know that Alexander Skarsgaard or however you spell it is Erik on True Blood because OMG I WANT HIM)… Such a fun contest though and I’m sorry I’m so late on it Allie!!!

    1. Apparently Kristi, I’m really bad at this too! I only picked 3 winners. I don’t watch Breaking Bad, so I was kind of bored. And today I have an Emmy exhaustion.

  6. Damn, I missed the contest! Although I wouldn’t have done very well. I don’t watch many of the shows nominated, but I do watch Good Wife and Veep, so I was excited that my girls won! Also happy that The Normal Heart won – amazing movie.

Gotta love the DVR – I recorded the show and started watching at 9:00, skipping all the stuff I wasn’t interested in.
