SAG Awards Recap

20th Annual SAG Awards Behind-The-Scenes - Day 2

The SAG Awards don’t have as much panache as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, in my opinion, but I still love to watch them.  First, the show is only two hours.  Second, the awards are for actors only (as they are given out by the actor’s union), not a cinematography category in sight.  Finally, over the years the SAG awards have proven, along with the Golden Globes, to be a good indicator of Oscar winners.  It’s also fun because TV acting is recognized as well.

Like last week, I’m just going to share some random thoughts:

♦  Yesterday I finally saw American Hustle and I’m telling you the movie is awesome.   I am in awe of the whole cast – they hit it out of the park.  So I was shocked that Jennifer Lawrence didn’t win.  I don’t want to say she was robbed, since I didn’t see 12 Years a Slave, but I’d be lying to say I wasn’t bummed.

♦  I’m not sure why Amy Adams wasn’t even nominated?  It’s criminal.  I’m curious to see what would have happened if she’d been up against Cate Blanchett (who won).  After listening to Blanchett’s speech – it’s official – I do not like her.

♦  Two losses in a row for Sandra Bullock, doesn’t bode well for the Oscars.

♦  Jared Leto gave a much better speech than he did last week.  He was classy, charming & funny.  But the important question is – ponytail or no ponytail?

♦  Mr. McConaughey, I still love you man.  I liked your speech about Neptune, and the audience (Ms. Blanchett being the obvious exception) seemed to as well.  I mean lets be real, we’re talking about the acting profession here.  I think otherworldly comparisons are totally appropriate.  Since Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t nominated for a SAG (?) I’m not sure how this will play out at the Academy Awards, where the two actors go head-to-head.  We shall see.

♦  Best Cast – American Hustle!  WooHoo!  If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you need to hustle on out to the theater.

♦  Brad Pitt, looking incredibly self-important, sported one of the worst haircuts I’ve ever seen on him.

♦  I heart Emma Thompson.   I want to go drinking with her!

♦  For the TV Drama category it was all about Breaking Bad, of course.

♦  Thankfully, Alec Baldwin did not win again for 30 Rock.  Maybe even Hollywood is finally sick of his ridiculous tirades.

♦  Yay Modern Family, but Sophia Vergara’s stupid shtick about no speaking good English – puhleeezzzeee.

♦  The Rita Moreno Tribute was pretty powerful.  When she sang, and they panned the audience, I saw quite a few celebrities with tears in their eyes.   That woman is 82?  Good God – I can’t believe it, she looks fabulous.  But the quote of the night came from my nine year-old, who caught a cleavage shot, “That dress is not appropriate for someone her age.”

♦  My “what the hell?” moment – Cuba Gooding Jr.  I’m thinking he had one too many.  What’d did you think of that Michele?

♦  My favorite dresses:  Sandra Bullock, Lupita Nyong’o, Anna Gunn, Amy Adams

♦  My least favorite dresses:  Cate Blanchett, Eddie Falco, Kerry Washington – really?

Did you watch the SAG Awards?  Did you even know it was on?  Share your thoughts, I’m curious to know your impressions about it all.

  1. Yes, I watched and knew the show was on. Rarely do I miss an awards show. I actually enjoyed this year’s SAG Awards. Agree with all of your comments. As far as Cuba? Not proud. Will be going to see American Hustle this week. Big A and I saw Lone Survior on Sat and Little A and I saw Wolf of Wall Street yesterday. Lone Survivor was good but tough to watch what those men went through. Brutal. Wolf of Wall Street was good but soooo uncomfortable watching it with my 17 yr old son. Lots of nudity, sex and drug scenes. Very disturbing at times. Oh, and it was 3 hours. There’s only so much one can handle. Ick. Wall Street was insane in the 80’s as far as excess. I actually looked over at Alex and said “You DO know that ALL of this is wrong, right?” He got a good chuckle out of that.

    1. Rich wanted to see Wolf of Wall Street, but I’d heard that the three hours of it was just too much and that people were walking out. I don’t know, if I’ll going to invest that kind of time, I want to by more inspired, no? BTW – I think you may be one of the coolest mom’s ever.

      1. Why, thank you! You don’t know how much that means because the cool factor is slowly going out the window as the kids get older. :(. 2 people walked out when we were there. Reminds me of the chuckle we got at all the older men walking out of Brokeback Mtn. If you have the stomach, and the time, it might be worth it since it’s nominated.
