First Track Meet!

Barrett’s First Track Meet!

Finally – we had our big day!  As I’ve been writing about for weeks, my son Barrett became a member of his school’s track team.  After the first two events were rained out, he finally ran in his first track meet.  And it was awesome!

Little background.  At Barrett’s last IEP meeting, his PE coach asked me if there was anything I’d like him to help Barrett with.  I offhandedly suggested having him run, so he could win the 50 yard dash at the Special Olympics this year.  His teacher, Bobbi Jo, heard this and, as is par for the course for this particular Autism Angel, had an idea – to put Barrett on the track team.   Continue reading First Track Meet!

…Of What Could Have Been

At heart, I’m a glass is half full type of girl, although admittedly, I’ve had phases when the glass was half empty – and sometimes even bone dry. Still I think my propensity to be positive is what has kept me mostly sane on this autism journey. I try to keep my essays about Barrett positive, because I loathe the thought of anyone feeling sorry for us. But sometimes, sometimes I can’t conjure up my inner Pollyanna. Call for Autism Angel Submissions

World-autism-awareness-day[1]

To promote Autism Awareness Month last year, I featured a series of posts about individuals who have helped my son on his autism journey.  I wanted to celebrate and thank the angels in our lives whose skill, kindness, dedication, patience, and support have helped get Barrett to where he is today. This year, I thought I would feature guest posts from other writers about their Autism Angels.  If you have or know an autism teacher, therapist, parent, or respite provider who has touched your life, or the life of  someone you love who lives with autism, I’d love to feature them on my blog during the month of April.  The submissions can be in a traditional essay or interview format and contain links.  I’d also like to feature pictures.  If you’re interested, please email me at allie@thelatchkeymom.com.  I will accept submissions from March 15th to April 15th.

A Tiny Peek Inside My Autumn World

015

As I may have mentioned, ad nauseum, I love autumn.  There are many events I get excited about (football, leaves changing, boots and scarves, my wedding anniversary, Halloween, my birthday) during this stretch of the calendar.  One of my favorites is driving up to the north Georgia Mountains to visit Burt’s Pumpkin Farm.  That’s where we buy our pumpkins each year and of course, enjoy a hay ride.  As has become tradition, we go with some close family friends and try to make a day of it.  The kids are getting older, and I think some of them may be over the ritual – but tough.  My children are going until they no longer live at home!  Continue reading A Tiny Peek Inside My Autumn World
