Looking for La La by Ellie Campbell

This British Chick Lit story is about Cathy, a stay-at-home mother at a crossroads in her life.  What does a woman, who’s given up her career for home and family, do when the last child goes to school?  Does she join the ranks of school volunteers or get a job that actually pays?  Cathy is feeling the pressure from her husband Declan and her fellow working mom friends to get a job. But Cathy has no desire to work, nor in her opinion, any marketable.  She also has a terrible fear of interviews.  She’s not feeling any appreciation for what she does as a wife and mother, either.  To Cathy it seems that since giving birth, she’s entered a period of indentured servitude.  This is an issue that will resonate with many mothers who’ve come to feel this way, believe me!  Continue reading…

Chick Lit Plus Book Review

Last one for a while, promise:)!  But I LOVED this book!  The Partner Track by Helen Wan is a thrilling “girl power” read.

Ingrid Yung is an Asian American woman who’s living her immigrant parents’ American dream.  She graduated top of her class from Yale, and then followed up with a law degree from Columbia.  Right after graduation she’s hired by the world renowned law firm, Parsons Valentine.  For the last eight years she’s literally slaved away in her quest for partnership.  In addition to her credentials and dedication, Ingrid is also a “twofer.”   With Ingrid on staff, the firm can check two boxes in the diversity column because she’s Asian American and a woman – the only woman left from her freshman class of colleagues.  Continue

A book review by Allie Smith

This story is presented in the form of a personal journal.  Amelia Gifford is studying at Edinburgh University in Scotland, 1964, when she discovers she’s pregnant.   As with any unplanned pregnancy, especially in the early 1960’s, the situation is complicated.  Although Amelia’s in love with the father of the baby, she knows they have no future together.  This leaves Amelia with a difficult decision to make. The book is divided into sections, with the first section laying out the events leading up to the pregnancy.   In the remaining three sections, each of Amelia’s choices is played out, which reminded me of Sliding Doors with the whole question of “what if?”  Continue
